Flix Profile: Meet Kiki Whatley, Brewer

As you may know, Flix Brewhouse is the home of the Other Worlds Austin SciFi Film Festival held each December. OWA also offers special SciFi and Horror screenings throughout the year. OWA continues this year's monthly programming with the Texas premiere of DAVE MADE A MAZE on Wednesday, July 19, at 7:30pm.

We hope that our fans are just as excited as we are! New developments are in store for OWA, as well as for Flix Brewhouse, including a welcome addition to the Flix Brewhouse team -- Kiki Whatley, Assistant Brewer.

I've known Kiki for over 3 years, and I'm excited to hear that she's rejoined the Flix Brewhouse team. If I had to compare Kiki to a SciFi film character, it would be my favorite female SciFi character Ellen Ripley of the ALIEN franchise -- competent, smart, resilient, willing to step up to any challenges, and ready to kick ass. Other Worlds Austin: Tell us about your background and how you became involved in Flix Brewhouse.

I originally became involved in Flix Brewhouse as a bartender 4 years ago. I was eyeballing the brew side of Flix to the point where I was going in on my days off to talk with Flix brewers Justin Rizza and Carlo Garcia about the brewing process. They were kind enough to take me under their wings and teach me the fundamentals of brewing beer -- I started homebrewing after that.

I then left Flix to work at Independence Brewing Company for 2 1/2 years where I learned hands-on in a large, full-production scale about brewing, cellaring and packaging. An opportunity recently arose at Flix Brewhouse for an assistant brewer/cellar position, and Carlo offered me the position -- and I said yes!!

OWA: What's it like working in the non-traditional setting at Flix? What makes it special and unique?

The brewing process at Flix is pretty traditional in basic methodology comparatively to the larger scale brewing facilities, with the exception that we are not currently distributing our beers -- but we are licensed to do so.  We have anywhere from 5 to 7 core house beers on tap at the bar, similar to a any production facility that has a tap room.  We also  offer special single/short batches of beers.

OWA: Are you a SciFi fan? What are your favorite SciFi flicks?

I am a huge SciFi fan.  All of the Star Treks are my thing -- I'm a huge Trekkie.

OWA: Are you a horror fan? What are your favorite horror films?

Yes! I also love horror and gory movies.  Scary ones about witches and ghosts and demons are my favorites.

OWA: Who are your favorite movie hero/heroines? horror villains?

Hmmm, Wolverine is my all-time favorite Marvel superhero, Aquaman is my favorite DC superhero. (For villains) Jabba the Hut is pretty gnarly ... Leatherface, too.

OWA: STAR WARS or STAR TREK? Favorite episode?

STAR TREK! From the old 60’s series, I’d pick the episode S1 E4 "The Naked Time," -- that's a good one.  Star Trek: The Next Generation (STNG) Season 5, Episodes 7 & 8, where Data meets Spock.

OWA: What do you do when you aren't brewing beer?

I’ll read books on beer and beer science, or attend beer functions. Spend time with my daughters and with my husband who is also an assistant brewer/cellar at Austin Beerworks. Going fishing or do some gardening and the never-ending task of working on my cars.
