For many of us at Other Worlds, October is our favorite month - and for good reason! The weather is finally getting comfortable in Austin, we are only a mere couple months away from the festival, and of course we get to celebrate horror all month long!
Summer is almost gone and the season of pumpkin spice is about to begin. September brings fall, football, foliage, and, according to what is coming new to Netflix, the season to get caught up on some really great SciFi and Horror TV series. So go grab yourself a PSL (if you’re in Texas like us at OWA, maybe get a cold version) and hunker down because there is a lot to watch this month!
With a massive heat wave looming across the country, August is going to be one of the rougher months to endure. Not to mention the fact that, for many, school starts back up again at the end of the month. This means that soon there will be busier schedules and less lazy days. However, Netflix is treating us this month to some great SciFi and Horror to help us take full advantage of these last bits of summer.
I remember very distinctly my first real experience watching a horror film. I was in 5th grade and a girl from my school was having a sleepover. After we looked through and ogled over pictures of Leonardo DiCaprio, JTT, and Devon Sawa in Teen Beat, it was time to watch a movie. In pops HOUSE OF WAX starring Vincent Price.
I don’t know what it’s like for other states in the US, but in Texas, learning our state's history is a mandatory subject for all school students. It is our honor to learn about Davy Crockett, Ima Hogg, Santa Anna, the Alamo, the six countries and their flags that once ruled over this beautiful expanse... My Texas history class fell during my 7th grade year. One of our projects that year was to pair up and make a film about a famous couple or duo in Texas history. I played Lee Harvey Oswald and my friend played Jack Ruby – it's a truly golden piece of film, I promise you.
