Austin, TX -- Other Worlds Austin SciFi Film Festival announces its final wave of programming for Austin’s first and only SciFi film festival (Dec 6-9) at Flix Brewhouse.

For its fifth year, Other Worlds will have more great SciFi features and shorts from around the globe, more filmmakers and special guests, and some big retro films, including 2018 Launch Film: the 30th anniversary screening of ALIEN NATION, starring James Caan and Mandy Patinkin.

“There couldn’t be a timelier opportunity to screen ALIEN NATION,” says Bears Rebecca Fonté, OWA Founder and Artistic Director, “a film that looks at how Americans treat otherness when it shows up on our doorstep. Science Fiction can force us to face ourselves in the mirror, even if the view isn’t pretty.”

Other Worlds previously announced another timely retro screening: the dystopian BORN IN FLAMES (35th anniversary), as well as the theatrical pilot of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (40th anniversary) with 2018 Defender of the Universe recipient, Alan J. Levi. Alan will also host a second screening, a secret pick from one of his favorite directorial efforts, and have a conversation about his illustrious career.

Included in the Final Wave are the World Premieres of Closing Night Film ENCOUNTER, THE FARE, and previously announced ARTIST DEPICTION. North American premieres include THE AXIOM, along with previously announced PRECOGNITION and 2050. The US premiere of ELIJAH AND THE ROCK CREATURE is open to the public, including children – FREE for anyone under 15.

Other Worlds is also proud to announce this year’s Mary Shelley Award nominees:

OVUM - Cidney Hue, wri/dir

DIMINUENDO - Sarah Goldberger, co-wri

PENNY PATTERSON - Stephanie Donnelly, wri/dir

ANDROMEDA - Emily Limyun Dean, wri/dir

THE FARE - Brinna Kelly, wri/producer

PULSE - Stevie Cruz-Martin, dir

In its fourth year, the Mary Shelley Award for SciFi Filmmaking is awarded to the best film that furthers the involvement and representation of women in the SciFi genre. This award is sponsored by Canine Productions, producers of award-wining shorts, music videos, and documentaries. The Mary Shelley Award Jury for 2018 is:

Melanie Addington, Executive Director, Oxford Film Festival

Lizzie Borden, Filmmaker (BORN IN FLAMES writer/director)

Jacqueline Coley, Editor, Rotten Tomatoes

And Other Worlds Austin and Austin School of Film will again host a Screenwriting Workshop, this year presented by Chad Archibald and Jayme Laforest. Join them on Saturday the 8th for a discussion about the relationship between directors and writers. Chad Archibald is a founder of Black Fawn Films, and the director this year’s UWA selection I’LL TAKE YOUR DEAD and last year’s Orbiter selection THE HERETICS, as well as BITE, EJECTA, THE DROWNSMEN and many more. Jayme Laforest cowrote I’LL TAKE YOUR DEAD, THE HERETICS and BITE with Chad. How are ideas traded back and forth from draft to draft? How does a screenwriter collaborate with the person who can realize the idea? Is it limiting or open up new possibilities? How does the director turn off the production part of their brain to just think pre-production?

“I’m so proud that in five years I’ve seen Other Worlds grow from a poorly drawn logo on scrap paper to the most important SciFi Film Festival in America,” says Fonté. This year we have more World and North American Premieres than ever before. We also have more films than ever before! Distributors are coming to us with their latest pickups and more filmmakers than ever before are invading our town in December to share their work with our often sold-out screenings.

“Five and a half years ago Other Worlds was an idea that came up after a night of drinking with Bears Fonte’” adds Dan Repp, Senior Programmer and Event Director. “Little did I know then that my friend was actually going to deliver on a drunken promise let alone the festival would change my life. I’m so proud to be a part of this team and of what Other Worlds has become in this short time. I love that our audience challenges us to provide the best programming and lets us know when we have missed the mark.”

Other Worlds Austin Full Slate of Films

“The word that comes to mind when I think of our feature lineup this year for both OWA and UWA is, diversity,” says Repp. “While our films all have well-developed characters and challenging point of views, they are all very different in their own way. The emotional spectrum that the audience with experience this year will hopefully challenge their definitions of Scifi and Horror. I have a feeling the Flix lobby will be full of conversations about what how the films can be interpreted and how all the subtext can be unfolded in different ways.”

“After five years, I think the greatest expectation that our audience has set for the festival is programming high quality shorts,” says Repp. “I love that our shorts programs almost always come close to selling out. I think this year will not disappoint. What separates our festival from others is that our whole programming team has a say in the shorts program. That’s 10 different and passionate opinions instead of having one or two programmers making the decisions. What comes out of the shorts programming meeting is an eclectic mix of visual storytelling that will entertain and provoke thought.”
