Other Worlds Film Festival is honored to announce that it will present famed writer/director/producer Nicholas Meyer with its “Defender of the Universe” award at the fest's sixth annual celebration of SciFi, Horror, and other-worldly filmmaking to be held December 5 - 8, 2019 in Austin, Texas. Mr. Meyer will host an exclusive 40th anniversary screening of the classic SciFi thriller TIME AFTER TIME and will do a special Q&A after the screening.
In honor of Nicholas Meyer, Other Worlds is teaming with several partners for local events with Meyer, including a Screenwriting Workshop, a Book Signing, and a Presentation from his archive at the University of Iowa.
“When we started this festival five years ago, it was just a dream that we would be able to bring someone of Nicholas Meyer’s stature to Austin.” says Bears Rebecca Fonté, OW Founder and Artistic Director. “Meyer is to Star Trek what Kasdan is to Star Wars, involved in all of the best of them. Meyer is the ultimate storyteller, whether it’s Kirk and Spock, or H.G. Wells and Jack the Ripper in TIME AFTER TIME, or Holmes and Watson in his books, he is able to bring a fresh voice to characters we think we know.”
Starring Malcolm McDowell, David Warner, and Mary Steenburgen, TIME AFTER TIME follows
H.G. Wells as he pursues Jack the Ripper to the 20th Century when the serial murderer uses the future writer's time machine to escape his time period.
“When this film came out I adored it, but was too young to fully appreciate why,” explains Don Elfant, OW Director of Marketing & Development. “It’s a SciFi/Thriller/Romantic Comedy mashup before mashups were a big thing. It definitely took me to “another world” which turned out to be my world, just seen through the eyes of H.G. Wells and Jack the Ripper! At the time, I thought SciFi was just aliens and spaceships. Forty years later, I am beyond excited to not only meet Nicholas Meyer, but to have a weekend of events dedicated to this film and his other wonderful works.”
New Sherlock Holmes Novel
Nicholas Meyer (author, screenwriter, and film director) not only amazed readers when he published his international best-seller The Seven-Per-Cent Solution (a “previously unpublished case as recorded by Dr. John Watson”), he also changed the popular conception of Sherlock Holmes, providing modern fans with a brilliant detective whose fierce rationality is balanced with flaws and addictions.
Now, in THE ADVENTURE OF THE PECULIAR PROTOCOLS (Minotaur Books, October 15th, $25.99), Meyer returns with a new, previously unknown case from Watson’s journal — a case that has Holmes and Watson searching out the origins of a 20th-century horror.
In collaboration with Book People, Mr. Meyer will sign books at the festival before he accepts his “Defender of the Universe” award.
