Austin, TX – Other Worlds Film Festival is proud to announce the World premiere of the psychological SciFi thriller, THE MANDELA EFFECT. This special screening takes place on Wednesday, October 23 (7:30pm) at Galaxy Highland 10 Theatre. Director David Guy Levy will be in attendance and will do a Q&A after the film, along with actors Aleksa Palladino and Robin Lord Taylor.

The Mandela Effect refers to a situation in which a large mass of people believes that an event occurred when it did not. The theory pulls its name from the bizarre case of many people believing that Nelson Mandela died in prison — going so far as to “recall” clips from a televised funeral — though the civil rights leader actually died in 2013. Other examples of the so-called effect include misquoted movie lines (“Luke, I am your father,” “We’re going to need a bigger boat,” “Hello, Clarice”); the collective memory of a movie called Shazaam that SUPPOSEDLY starred the actor/comedian Sinbad in the 1990s; and the generally accepted idea that C-3PO was entirely gold.

In this captivating film, a man becomes obsessed with facts and events that have been collectively misremembered by thousands of people. Believing the phenomena to be the symptom of something larger, his obsession eventually leads him to question reality itself.

"The MANDELA EFFECT explores an eerie theory,” explains Robyn Paxman, Other Worlds programmer and Transportation Director, “that the world around us might not be what it seems in a way that will have you checking constantly for your own ‘glitches’ in reality."

The new film is based on a story created by Levy and Schlachtenhaufen and marks their second creative collaboration, following their horror feature WOULD YOU RATHER.

“THE MANDELA EFFECT is a timely and relatable topic which we think audiences will really gravitate towards,” says Levy, “and we are excited to make this into a heady sci-fi film that will ooze with indie spirit.”
