Other Worlds' 2021 Defender of the Universe Screening is FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR (1986), with director Randal Kleiser appearing in-person at the fest to accept this year's Defender award!

"I have such a clear memory of being at some sports/outdoors summer camp that my parents had forced me to go to and being saved by an onslaught of rain and taken by bus to FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR on the day it came out." says Bears Rebecca Fonté, Other Worlds Founder and Artistic Director. "Few films capture the joy and wonder of SciFi from a child's perspective as well as this Disney gem that is long overdue for a reboot. I'm so excited to have Randal Kleiser at the festival this year as our Defender of the Universe. I know for most of America he will always be the director of Grease. when I was a kid you were either somebody who liked Grease or somebody who liked Star Wars, somehow Randal captured the imagination of all of us."
Our two Centerpiece Films for 2021: SIGHT EXTENDED (Writer/Director: Daniel Lazo, Eran May-Raz) and DARK CLOUD (Director: Jay Ness, Writer: J.J. Kaiser).

"This year our two centerpiece films capture the quite common theme at Other Worlds: technology with unexpected consequences. The most frightening thing about both of them is that the technology almost completely exists, whether it's augmented reality vision connected to the Internet of Things and body monitoring, or smart homes with artificial intelligence and body monitoring." says Bears Rebecca Fonté, Other Worlds Founder and Artistic Director. "SIGHT EXTENDED, the Other Worlds Centerpiece, is the kind of film where you realize you are on board with the characters decisions until it's far too late. DARK CLOUD, the Under Worlds Centerpiece, is so on point that it is hard to imagine it not happening sometime in the future."
Our Closing Night Film is RESIDENTS OF ARCADIA (Writer/Director: Dom Cutrupi).

"Residents of Arcadia uses Science Fiction to depict the ongoing struggle Immigrants face when coming to North America." says Dan Repp, Senior Programmer and Event Director. "This film gave me a perspective that I haven’t thought about and it has kept me thinking long after the viewing. It’s a perfect way to close our festival."
"A couple of other films I'm really excited about, NOVA and OW alumni Zachary Endres’ first feature HOMEBODY: THE HAUNT OF GUY WITHERS both show that science fiction filmmaking does not have to be limited by budget and instead allows us to push the boundaries of creativity." says Bears Rebecca Fonté, Other Worlds Founder and Artistic Director. "MINOR PREMISE we got to play last year virtually but when we found out that the film makers had still not seen the film theatrically on the big screen, we had to welcome them back. MINOR PREMISE was one of the most discussed films in our program last year and it's the kind of film that warrants repeat watching. And yes we actually have two films in the program called HOMEBODY, the other one I think I pretty much stole from myself over at aGLIFF. As someone transgender, the idea of being able to use neuroscientific meditation to jump into a body that maybe suits you better is rather appealing. In this case, it offers the opportunity for what may be one of the funniest and heartwarming films we've ever had at Other Worlds."

The other amazing feature films in our Other Worlds 2021 second wave that we're happy to announce are THE ALTERNATE, BOY #5, ESLUNA: THE CROWN OF BABYLON, KEEPING COMPANY, RED SNOW, TUNE INTO THE FUTURE, TURN OF THE SCREW, and ULTRASOUND.
