Mission Accomplished:
First-Ever Celebration of All Things Horror!

On Saturday May 22nd, we had a nearly sold-out event for our first-ever Under Worlds Film Festival. Starting at noon we hung out in the same theater until about 11:30 at night, watching five horror films. It was so good to be hanging out again at our favorite theater the Galaxy Highland, an Other Worlds sponsor (and purveyor of pretty decent food and alcohol for a cineplex).

We had a Q&A for every film, including one that Bears Rebecca had to record at 8 in the morning on the day of the festival. Brett Ryan Bonowicz moderated his first official Q&A as an official team member from his home in California with the filmmaker of THE LAST MATINEE in Uruguay. That film was probably regarded by the fans as the most batshit insane of the day and certainly featured the most number of eyeballs in jars.

The opening film, VICIOUS FUN, marked the fourth film we've shown from the Black Fawn Collective, a truly great Horror production team out of Canada. The day ended with two live Q&As (for THE STYLIST and THE OLD WAYS) as well as with special guests from each filmmaking team that just happen to live in Austin.

It was a great day that reminded us about why we love doing the festival: to see everybody enjoying the films. Our first Orbiter screening of the year will probably be in July, so look out for news of that. And thanks for coming out to the theater again.  - Bears Rebecca Fonte
Other Worlds is co-presenting a mini-series for Austin Jewish Film Festival this summer!

"Autonomies" runs from June 12 - July 4.
Set in an alternate present where the state is brutally divided between the secular capital of Tel Aviv and a Jerusalem governed by an ultra  -Orthodox “Haredi Autonomy,” this dystopian thriller tells the story of a wheeler-dealer who smuggles contraband between the two regions and a little girl at the center of a secular-Orthodox custody battle. Israel is experiencing a golden age of episodic television, turning out some of the finest narrative storytelling in any medium, and we’ll screen all five episodes for a proper binge. Autonomies shows why Israel is fertile ground for powerful fiction: the series is a boiling cauldron of the issues of identity, religion, politics, and personal freedom that define life in the country today.
June 15th is our Regular Deadline for submissions!
