August 25: In-Person Orbiter Screening HELL IS EMPTY

Other Worlds is excited to announce the first in-person feature of the 2021 Orbiter Year-Round Series: HELL IS EMPTY. This special screening will take place on Wednesday, August 25 (7:30pm) at Galaxy Highland 10 Theatre. Writer/Director Jo Shaffer will be in attendance for a Q&A after the film!

A self-styled messiah initiates a teenage runaway into his cult of sister-wives. Her rebellious nature upends the community, triggering a bloody uprising against the patriarch.

"Hell is Empty kicks off our Orbiter series with shades of the Under Worlds." says Dan Repp, Senior Programmer and Event Director. "Jo Shaffer brings a fresh voice to the horrors of a patriarchal community. Fiction brushes against our reality with a male character that uses religion to manipulate women."

COME TRUE: An Other Worlds Review
by Jordan Brown

Canada has been churning out some truly fascinating SciFi and Horror content over the past decade. See Brandon Cronenberg’s ANTIVIRAL and POSSESSOR (nepotism perhaps, but I give it a pass since he’s actually talented), or Jeff Barnaby’s BLOOD QUANTUM (socially conscious and boasts perhaps the last clever twist on the zombie trope which, like its subject, refuses to die off). Here at Other Worlds, we proudly count Tricia Lee (BLOOD HUNTERS) and the Black Fawn Distribution team (I’LL TAKE YOUR DEAD, THE HERETICS) among our alumni from the Great White North. Today I’m here to tell you that the 2020 film COME TRUE, though not without its faults, deserves its place among this library of recent genre flicks that are worth your attention.   READ MORE...

Fears, Anxieties, and the Depression
by Brett Ryan Bonowicz

Science fiction can rather nakedly show us who we are as a society. We send a message to the future with our stories and our films, coded through genre, to say what our fears for the future were in the moment we lived in.

We can see it in the films of the 1950s “Atomic Age” where THEM and GODZILLA were the products of nuclear testing. Numerous B-films of the 1960s gave us nuclear articulated villains, atomic inspired nightmares, and dystopian hellscapes.  READ MORE...
