The series premiere of Lovecraft Country touched down on HBO two weeks ago. Most notably, it boasts Jordan Peele as an executive producer: patron saint of forcing white people to come to terms with their ingrained racism by “infiltrating” primarily white-led genres of Horror and SciFi. And based on the first episode, the show promises to pack quite the wallop.

Star Trek: TNG came out the same month I was born. I distinctly remember sitting on my Fisher Price plastic chair in the hall while my parents watched TNG after my bedtime and being enthralled.

GROWING UP, MY FAVORITE BOOK WAS “OUR UNIVERSE,”

As a 10-year-old, ZENON was an easily digestible, hopeful look at what a future world could look like. Grounded with teen familiarities like slang (“zetus lapetus!”), futuristic fashion, and rock star idols (Prota Zoa!), the movie is a cozy wave of future nostalgia.

THE PASTMAN’s core question of what would be considered humane, considered “the right thing to do,” in such a fantastical situation…really grounds it and gives it its emotional power.

AFTERLIFE embraces the mundane and quietly considers the sometimes incredibly difficult choice to carry on for another day, especially in the face of pain and grief. But don’t worry, it’s a comedy.

1BR explores what it is to truly break someone, and challenges the audience to put themselves in the place of Sarah, our protagonist.

This is easily one of my favorite films we’ve had at Other Worlds, and not just because of the simple nostalgic trappings. It’s clear a lot of love for the horror genre went into this; no trope is left unused, every cliché and contradiction is questioned and embraced.

Reactions to the deaths of celebrities are strange when you stop to think about them. These are people we didn’t know. When one does pass on, we usually celebrate their work… So what do you do when one passes on in a horrific way that doesn’t call for celebration?

To this day, I see posts reminding me and others who may be suffering with their own mental health issues, that “Space Mom would want us to take our meds and take care of ourselves.”
