Inspirational Images: Our Universe

Growing up, my favorite book was “Our Universe,”

aka “National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe.” It was full of all sorts of maps and pictures of all our planets and orbits of comets an different space satellites. However, what I remember most was at the end, a whole section was dedicated to fantasizing about what life might look like on another planet. There were proposed aliens for every planet, with different adaptations influenced by environmental concerns. I loved this illustration of what Martian life might be because it captured my imagination – not only was it a creature I had never seen, but it set up why the first probes to land on Mars couldn’t find anything. It made me think there are millions of worlds out there, with millions of environments. Why would life look like anything we’ve already seen?
