Sinterklaas is coming to town...to kill you?
A few years back I stumbled across a film called SAINT (or as it known in the Netherlands, SINT). First of all, you have to understand that the Europeans often have very strange thoughts on holiday characters. Just look at RARE EXPORTS. This 2010 Dutch film is about Sinterklaas, who is a little bit like Santa Claus except he has blades on his staff and he comes in the middle of night to murder people. The tradition dates back to 1492 when a corrupt Bishop was killed. The people in the town don't realize the history of the celebration and so they dressed as Sinterklaas and his army of murderous ghosts known as the Black Peter.
What's This? Holiday Hypocrisy?
Every October 1st, my roommate places a black-and-white wreath on the front door to celebrate the spooky Halloween spirit. But there is a problem: the wreath is adorned in Jack Skellington lights and is clearly a THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS themed wreath. Why is it up in October!?
Taking the Haunted House too far
It’s a ritual at the start of October to search for new Horror films. Usually the new additions on any of the streaming options you’ve either watched already or just aren’t interested in. But amongst the swathes of cheap gore, you’ll find a tense treat that feeds your orange-and-black Halloween-tinted soul. Thus was my discovery of HAUNT.
Finnish Fantasies & Sadistic Santas
I chose to talk about RARE EXPORTS: A CHRISTMAS TALE, a Finnish fantasy-horror-comedy directed by Jalmari Helander. This feature-length film is inspired by his 8 minute short RARE EXPORTS INC. from 2003. One of the main things I just love is the juxtaposition of the colors being bright while the aesthetic and humor is dark.

Lovecraft was a racist. What do we do with That?
The series premiere of Lovecraft Country touched down on HBO two weeks ago. Most notably, it boasts Jordan Peele as an executive producer: patron saint of forcing white people to come to terms with their ingrained racism by “infiltrating” primarily white-led genres of Horror and SciFi. And based on the first episode, the show promises to pack quite the wallop.
Inspiring Images: Q
Star Trek: TNG came out the same month I was born. I distinctly remember sitting on my Fisher Price plastic chair in the hall while my parents watched TNG after my bedtime and being enthralled.
Inspirational Images: Our Universe
GROWING UP, MY FAVORITE BOOK WAS “OUR UNIVERSE,”
aka “National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe.” It was full of all sorts of maps and pictures of all our planets and orbits of comets an different space satellites. However, what I remember most was at the end, a whole section was dedicated to fantasizing about what life might look like on another planet.
Inspirational Images: Zenon
As a 10-year-old, ZENON was an easily digestible, hopeful look at what a future world could look like. Grounded with teen familiarities like slang (“zetus lapetus!”), futuristic fashion, and rock star idols (Prota Zoa!), the movie is a cozy wave of future nostalgia.
BERKELEY SQUARE: The first time-travel film
I’d like to think the debates that followed PRIMER and LOOPER had their precursor in the audiences of BERKELEY SQUARE.
A Different Side of Time Travel
THE PASTMAN’s core question of what would be considered humane, considered “the right thing to do,” in such a fantastical situation…really grounds it and gives it its emotional power.
Addicted to Addiction Films
Since I want to avoid spoilers at all costs, I thought I’d base my blog on the title alone and talk about some of the deadly addictions in SciFi and Horror films. I definitely think the cutest addiction was E.T.’s untamable hunger for of Reese’s Pieces, but I want to go deadlier than that…
The Tough Love of Nordic Gallows Humor
AFTERLIFE embraces the mundane and quietly considers the sometimes incredibly difficult choice to carry on for another day, especially in the face of pain and grief. But don’t worry, it’s a comedy.
Meet Lauren Kitching, our new poster artist!
We are so excited to introduce you to our new artist, Texas-bred and LA-based Lauren Kitching! Outreach Director Tessa Morrison tracked her down and asked her a few questions about her art, SciFi, body positivity, and life in general.
SPIRALing Thoughts While Driving
The reason I programmed SPIRAL one minute after watching it is that I have felt for most of my life, just as helpless as Malik does. This film capture that. And that was all by minute 45…
1BR, No Pets…
1BR explores what it is to truly break someone, and challenges the audience to put themselves in the place of Sarah, our protagonist.
